چکیده

Observations of Land C-band backscatter from snow cover are presented at all polarizations. Airborne passive-microwave data was collected in Northern Finland during EMAC’95 (European Multi-sensor Airborne Campaign-95). The measurements cover the 6.8–18.7 GHz frequency range with both vertical and horizontal polarizations. The empirical SAR data were acquired by EMISAR of Technical University of Denmark over the city of Oulu in Northern Finland during EMAC’95. Airborne measurements were conducted on 22–23 March, and on 2–3 May 1995. The land-use map of the test sites was obtained from the National Land Survey of Finland. This study combines the semi-empirical and empirical models that were developed. Applicability of the forest transmissivity formulas developed by using the different data sets of passive and active sensors is shown. Because of the effect of dry snow at C-band is more visible than at L-band. A C-band semi-empirical backscattering model is developed for the forest-snow-ground system.

Estimation of snow water equivalence using SIR-C/X-SAR. II. Inferring snow depth and particle size

The relationship between snow water equivalence (SWE) and SAR backscattering coefficients at Cand X-band (5.5 and 9.6 GHz) can be either positive or negative. Therefore, discovery of the relationship with an empirical approach is unrealistic. Instead, we estimate snow depth and particle size using SIR-C/X-SAR imagery from a physically-based first order backscattering model through analyses of t...

C-Band SAR Imagery for Snow-Cover Monitoring at Treeline, Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

RADARSAT and ERS-2 data collected at multiple incidence angles are used to characterize the seasonal variations in the backscatter of snow-covered landscapes in the northern Hudson Bay Lowlands during the winters of 1997/98 and 1998/99. The study evaluates the usefulness of C-band SAR systems for retrieving the snow water equivalent under dry snow conditions in the forest–tundra ecotone. The ba...

An Analysis of Insar Coherence of Boreal Forests Based on Electromagnetic Scattering Modeling

In this paper an electromagnetic scattering model, RT2, and a semi-empirical model, interferometric water cloud model (IWCM), were used to simulate backscatter and coherence of boreal forest at C-band. The coherence is related to the backscattering coefficients of the vegetation and the underlying ground surface, and the transmissivity of forests via the IWCM model where interactions between ve...

Retrieval of biomass in boreal forests from multitemporal ERS-1 and JERS-1 SAR images

The response of JERS-1 and ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to the forest stem volume (biomass) was investigated by employing a digital stem volume map and weather information. The stem volume map was produced from the National Forest Inventory sample plot data together with a LANDSAT thematic mapper (TM) image. A new indirect inversion method was developed and tested to estimate the forest...

Understanding the Radar Backscattering from Flooded and Nonflooded Amazonian Forests: Results from Canopy Backscatter Modeling

T o understand the potential of using multiwavelength imaging radars to detect flooding in Amazonian floodplain forests, we simulated the radar backscatter from a floodplain forest with a flooded or nonflooded ground condition at C-, L-, and P-bands. Field measurements of forest structure in the Anavilhanas archipelago of the Negro River, Brazil, were used as inputs to the model. Given the same...
